The 71st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) agreed to pass the document A/71/9, encouraging each member state to support China's "Belt and Road" initiative to boost economy development of Afghanistan and the region. In addition, the document urged international community to provide a secured environment for the implementation of the initiative.
It was the first time that all the 193 UN members agreed to incorporate the "Belt and Road" initiative into the UNGA resolution after Resolution 2,274 (2016) of the UN Security Council called on all parties to participate in the initiative this March.
The China-proposed “Belt and Road” initiative has been translated into international consensus. The wide acceptance and support received by the initiative have completely indicated that the program keeps abreast with the development, multilateralism and common interests of the UN.
As the most universal, representative and authoritative inter-governmental organization, the UN plays an indispensable role in safeguarding world peace, security and promoting common development. The UN Sustainable Development Summit held in September 2015 adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, drawing a blueprint for the world's development in the next 15 years.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said during the UN summit that China is ready to work with other relevant parties to implement the “Belt and Road” initiative. Taking the implementation of the UN agenda as its own duty, China will resolutely push forward global development.
The five development directions clarified by the initiative, namely policy coordination, facilities connectivity, unimpeded trade, financial integration and people-to-people bond, are highly coherent with the 17 goals set by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UN's support to the "Belt and Road" initiative will help create a favorable environment for the smooth implementation of the agenda.
To promote multilateral pragmatic cooperation is a priority of the UN as an inter-governmental organization. When President Xi met with António Guterres, secretary-general-designate of the UN, he noted that the Chinese side will continue to join and back the UN in various areas, staunchly practice multilateralism and uphold the international order in line with the principles set by the UN Charter.
The "Belt and Road" initiative, based on the principle of achieving common progress through dialogue and collaboration, aims to build a community of shared interest and destiny under the guidance of peaceful cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and win-win cooperation. The initiative is indeed a public product offered by China to achieve global peace and prosperity, which has been well taken by the UN and its members.
Early achievements have been made during the past three years after the initiative was raised. More than 100 countries and international organizations have participated in the project, signing more than 30 cooperation agreements with China.
In addition, a number of major infrastructure and projects have been implemented. More and more countries have seen the bright prospects and fruitful results of the Chinese initiative. The adoption of the UN resolution has indicated the unanimous agreement among the UN members on the initiative.
Given the complex international arena and promotion of global governance, peace and development are still the main tasks of the world. The UN faces new challenges and tasks in maintaining world peace and promoting common development, and the international community has showed a stronger will to cooperate with China.
We should take the opportunity and work with UN members to implement the "Belt and Road" initiative, bring more tangible benefits to the people, build a new model of international relations featuring win-win cooperation, and strive for a community of shared destiny, thus making more contributions to the long-term stability and prosperity of the world.
