During this year’s Almedalen Week in Visby, Sweden, the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) organizes a series of seminars in the area of peace, security and development.

The Almedalen Week is an annual event considered to be the most important forum in Swedish politics, with speeches, seminars and other political activities. During the Almedalen Week of 2015, the FBA will arrange a seminar titled “Time to talk to the terrorists?” on Tuesday, 30 June, 2-2.45 pm at the Sverige i världen scene. 

Jonathan Powell, founder of Inter Mediate, will speak about his experience as former chief of staff to Tony Blair and chief British government negotiator on Northern Ireland. He will be joined by Bitte Hammargren, renowned Swedish journalist, and Ingmar Karlsson, ambassador and senior fellow at Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, Lund University.

On Wednesday 1 July, the FBA will arrange a seminar on peacekeeping in the future, held at the Sverige i världen scene at 2-2.45 pm. Ameerah Haq, vice-chair for the UN Secretary-General’s Independent Panel on Peace Operations, will discuss challenges for future peacekeepers along with Kai Eide, Norwegian ambassador to Sweden and former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Afghanistan. Jonas Alberoth, Deputy Director-General at the FBA, will also participate in the discussion. The seminar will be moderated by Marika Griehsel, Swedish journalist and author.
